The model for the work are two paintings which permantly hang on the right hand wall of St. Michael's Church in Braunschweig.
The depicted male figures with ruffs are taken as a reference and in this respect emphasize the idea and representation with an 'emphasis' on the head in portrait painting.
The ruff was a fashion in the 17th century and was considered upscale going-out clothing, also known as the millstone ruff.
Women and men wore them. The decoration suggests a kind of inaccessibility and gives the head a particularly remarkable accentuation of social position, political ranking and class.
The placement shows the subject physically tethered to the weight; because the chain rests directly on the garment rather than pulling away, it mirrors psychological fixation—clinging to a burden by choice or habit rather than making the active effort to cast it off.
Both situations can be linked to the interpretation of female subjugation, both socially and in the institution - church. The “chaining” provides an indication of the social status of women in the 17th century and beyond.
The ruff, however, served both women and men (on an equal basis) as a fashionable symbol of the prosperity of the noble class and was represented in many portrait paintings from the 17th century to the Rococo era.
The Contradiction: Juxtaposing an ornament of pride with a symbol of restraint exposes the paradox of female status within elite social structures.

EN: The visual collection of Manhole images started in 2017 with the discovery of found and unfamiliar photographs. The collection has been inserted in various art works, performances and books.
The title of the work refers to the idea of longing, lost and re-lived memories. It represents the ‘Love’ for darkness with the urge towards a black hole.
Somehow to imagine to disappear into the black hole to discover a reality which is unlike the one which we are familiar with.
There is an incoherent connection between what appears to be there and that which can only be imagined however is existent.
Manhole is a visual collection of found, dis-remembered, collected and composed images. In process it is a reservoir of images which may be saved from forgetting.
